本期主题为“更新与改造+文化建筑”。从建筑设计角度来看，建筑更新与改造的对象不再是历史建筑与物质遗产，而是开始聚焦一般性现代建筑。这种转移恰恰反映了城市更新中更为普遍的问题，也在存量时代为建筑设计的进一步发展拓展了新的途径。从案例中可以看到两种设计方法：一是保留原有建筑的形态特征或构建体系；二是以全新建筑形象的塑造为目的。四个文化建筑项目的设计都着眼于用相对传统的材料，在现代的建筑形体与空间上焕新地表现应用。红砖、木板、陶板、砂岩，都有一点朴实厚重的意味，都是用小尺寸材料拼接成建筑构建体系。
